I got my first DSLR Camera back in 2008. An office mate of mine sold it to me because he was upgrading his unit to the latest model at that time. Although I already have the 'point and shoot' type, being a shutterbug made me want to have the DSLR and also 'upgrade' unit.
Unlike today, most cellphone cameras aren't that good back then; though my phone (so to say) is almost always up-to-date (I often change phones before), the built-in camera isn't just that good.

I was only using an entry-level model of the DSLR. I have no other gadgets to it except for the strap, the stock 18-55mm lens, a 55-200mm lens (which is a providence by Mr. Glen Funk and his wife Arch. Choie Funk), aside from the battery, charger and the cables that are included, that's right about it.
I have invested a considerable amount of time researching and studying to improve my craft in photography; from adjusting and compensating shutter speeds, apertures, depth of field, etc. Indeed my vocabulary increased during that time ;) Although I am no expert, I would like to share with you some of my old photos using the Nikon D40. Unfortunately, I had to sell the camera back in 2011 (but I kept the 55-200mm lens).

'Gesu in legno' (Jesus in wood)
A simple trick that I thought of to get the effect of the half-faced illumination. I turned off the light in my room and focused a flashlight on one side of the sculpture and without using any flash, I took this shot.
Wedding
I attended a friend's wedding and took this photo after the wedding rites as they were about to leave the church. Since I was elevated, the shot looking down at them added drama to the photo.
Magtataho (Soya Milk Snack Food Vendor)
The 'taho' is a famous snack food in the Philippines, usually sold in the morning. Well, I'm not sure if it is properly called a snack or a drink. Taho is made of soft tofu with sweetener and sago pearls like the tapioca. The taho vendor walks (others with a pedicab) the neighborhood of their choice and sells from house to house shouting in a loud voice the word "Tahooooooooo" - - which is prolonged. I happened to chance upon this taho vendor at the beach during one of my previous company's summer outing. It was weird for me to find a taho vendor on the beach. So I took his picture.
Confetti
And then there's the confetti. I took this shot during my mother-in-law's birthday party. I was happy about how the confetti is laid on top of the green grass. A simple projection of a happy time.
Kangkong
Food also spells happiness for me. Here's a picture of a fried 'kangkong leaf' on a plate with mayonnaise.
Smorgasbord
My plate at an eat-all-you can restaurant.
Kebab
Shrimp kebab. Skewered goodness.
Fire
This was taken at a friend's house who hosted a bar-b-q night out. When water was added to the flame, it was mad - - Thanks again to the Funk family for this event.
The Lamp
I took this photo of the lamp at a bar. It just seems to me that I am walking in the streets of old London or Italy at night and thinking about Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
These are all that I have for you now. I will post another series of my photography using the mobile phone as a medium.
In the end, we may not be able to perfect the art of photography. I think what's important is that your photos have a story to tell. We may lack in technique and technicality, but if we do it from the heart, it will be perfect!
Thank you for viewing and I hope that you enjoyed this set.
